7 Items to complete your fall business casual wardrobe
One of the best and worst parts about living in Canada is its four seasons. Sure, summer doesn’t last long, but it still gives us all an opportunity to get creative and switch up our wardrobes four times a year.
Personally, fall is my favourite fashion season. It gives us layers, coats, and neutral colours. With the cooler weather approaching, it’s time to freshen up your wardrobe, especially for those of you mandated back in the office.
Let’s explore 7 essential items that will complete your fall business casual wardrobe and keep you looking sharp and sophisticated. From a classic beige trench coat to versatile dark denim jeans, let's dive in and elevate your style for the autumn months.
1) Beige Wool Trench Coat
A timeless and versatile piece, a beige wool trench coat is a must-have in any fall wardrobe. The neutral colour complements a wide range of outfits and adds a touch of sophistication to your look. Whether you're heading to the office or attending a business meeting, a well-fitted trench coat is the perfect outerwear to keep you warm while maintaining a polished appearance. When you’re not at work, you can also throw this over a matching sweatsuit to complement an athleisure look.
Wear it with: a light coloured sweater, dark blue jeans, and Chelsea boots
2) Dark Brown Dress Boots
To complete your fall ensemble, invest in a pair of dark brown dress boots. These boots strike the right balance between casual and formal, making them suitable for various occasions. Choose a classic design with minimal embellishments, ensuring they seamlessly pair with both slacks and denim. For work commuters, dress boots are more comfortable than dress shoes and more sophisticated than runners. Note: If this is your first pair of dress shoes (boots or shoes), opt for black as it matches with almost all pant colours.
Wear it with: dark blue jeans or grey slacks
Buy it: (from left to right) Amazon - $65.99, Steve Madden - $200
3) Sweater in Beige or Dark Blue
A lightweight sweater in beige or dark blue is a great layering piece for your business casual wardrobe. Opt for a soft fabric like cashmere or merino wool for a luxurious feel and added warmth during cooler days. Whether you wear it over a dress shirt for a semi-formal look or pair it with slacks for a casual office day, a light sweater will be a go-to piece in your fall business casual wardrobe.
Wear it with: a dress shirt underneath or by itself over similar colour slacks to give it a monochrome look
Buy it: (from left to right) Banana Republic - $200, Amazon - $46.60
4) Dark Denim Jeans
While jeans are generally considered casual, dark denim jeans can be dressed up for business casual settings. Opt for a dark wash, no rips, with a straight cut for a polished appearance. Pair them with a blazer or a dress shirt to achieve a sophisticated yet laid-back look. Dark denim jeans offer a comfortable and stylish alternative to traditional slacks, giving you more flexibility in your fall outfit choices.
Wear it with: your new dark brown dress boots, lightweight sweater with white dress shirt underneath, and a blazer
5) Chinos in Maroon or Grey
Chinos, AKA more casual slacks without the middle pleat, are a wardrobe essential when it comes to business casual outfits. Opt for a less standard neutral colour like maroon or grey. Mix and match these with various shirts and sweaters for a range of stylish outfits throughout the season.
Wear it with: white sneakers and light coloured top
6) Cardigan or Sweater Vest
If you don’t already have a cardigan, opt for a cardigan before a sweater vest. These layers provide a polished look while offering the flexibility to adapt to varying temperatures. A cardigan can be worn over a dress shirt for a touch of sophistication, while a sweater vest can be paired with a crisp white tee and dress pants.
Wear it with: a dress shirt and tie or white tee
Buy it: (from left to right) Lost & Found - $175, Amazon - $39.70
7) Crossbody Laptop Bag
Complete your business casual outfits with a functional and stylish crossbody laptop bag. Choose a sleek leather (or faux leather) design that complements the rest of your outfit. This accessory not only keeps your laptop and work essentials organized but also adds a touch of modernity to your overall appearance. The crossbody style ensures comfort and convenience, making it an ideal choice for your daily commute and business meetings.
Wear it with: any of your business casual outfits
Buy it: (from left to right) Matt & Nat - $250, Ted Baker - $134
With these 7 essential items, you'll be well-prepared to elevate your business casual outfits for the fall season. Remember that you don’t have to shop for all new stuff. I always encourage my clients to use what they already have in their closet if the pieces fit well. Don’t have a dark blue sweater but have a black one? No problem! Put on a white dress shirt underneath and pair it with black jeans. If you’re starting your wardrobe from scratch, these 7 items are great building blocks for stylish and functional fall outfits. The best part about business casual is that these outfits also work for date nights and drinks after work. Enjoy the season in style!
